Armelle and Brigitte are sisters and have been working together for over 20 years and it was Armelle who came up with the concept of The Artisan Designers.

The work they produce is a modern twist on 'decoupage' which is a French word meaning 'to cut’. It involves cutting and pasting intricate paper shapes. This decorative art dates back to the 12th century where it was used to decorate lanterns, windows and boxes.

The cutting of an image can be challenging, especially when it is small and has many legs like insects and bees! The final image is then glued into position on the selected piece, after which a minimum of 17 layers of paint, varnish and lacquer are added. The process takes a lot of time and patience!

We like to take the traditional technique of decoupage and give it a modern twist. Bright, bold colours, fun imagery, crackle glaze and gold are the signatures of The Artisan Designers.

Armelle and Crumble

After a wonderful 30 years living in London, the time has come to move to pastures new and their new adventure in Rye is soon to start, where they are looking forward to getting back to the creative side.

Stay tuned for what they get up to next!

Crumble is a Papillion Jack Russell Cross who enjoys treats, exploring and long walks. She dislikes closed gates and cuddles when she’s not in the mood!

Brigitte and Foxy

Brigitte and Foxy are based in Mayfield, East Sussex and whilst they run the Bull House, they are most often found just up the road at the Workshop coming up with new combinations of colours and images, sourcing products and getting messy painting.

Foxy is a rescue Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix and enjoys treats, autumn and winter and is Brigitte’s shadow. His dislikes include flies, long grass and baths!
